Introducing The All New 2020 Jeep Gladiator

2020 Jeep Gladiator

It's hard to say how long the world has been waiting for Jeep's new pickup truck, but it's probably fair to say it's been a while. However, the wraps have now been taken off the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator, which is effectively a pickup version of the legendary Jeep Wrangler. Let's take a closer look and see where the all-new Jeep Gladiator will fit into the midsize truck segment.

Exterior styling

There aren't many surprises here as this first Jeep truck is a Wrangler from the rear seats forward. The five-foot rear bed doesn't detract from the overall look of the Wrangler, and it actually looks like a pretty natural progression for the nameplate. And if buyers want it to be even more like a regular Wrangler from time to time, the Gladiator can always be adorned with a tonneau cover to keep whatever's back there dry and clean. In fact, a tonneau also lends the Gladiator a little pseudo-military chic a lot of buyers might really appreciate.

Under the hood

Jeep has understandably stuck with its tried and tested 3.6-liter V-6 under the hood of this new variant, which sends its 285 horsepower to all four wheels through a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although it won't be available at launch, Jeep is also promising a 3.0-litre V-6 turbodiesel to arrive sometime in 2020. This unit will develop 220 horsepower and a very useful 442 lb.-ft. of torque and widen the appeal of the Gladiator even further.

Capability

Most people are aware of how capable on and off-road the Wrangler is, but the 2020 Jeep Gladiator takes Jeep capability to an entirely new level. The new Jeep has unmatched crawl ratios, 76 cm of water fording, and best-in-class towing and payload ratings. Don't forget, despite its considerable size this is still a midsize offering in the pickup market, but it can still offer a maximum towing capacity of 3,469 kg and a maximum payload of 725 kg when (properly equipped).

Everyday usability

Unlike any other midsize pickup truck in today's market, the Gladiator offers something extremely unique in the form of open-air driving thanks to the standard fabric top. A hardtop made from composite materials is also available as an option featuring removable panels, or which can be pulled off entirely if preferred. Also like the existing Wrangler, the doors of the all-new Gladiator can be removed completely with the use of an included Torx screwdriver, and the Jeep's windshield can also be folded flat. However, the Gladiator also offers all the things today's driver wants and expects from any thoroughly modern vehicle these days. A 5.0-inch touchscreen and infotainment system is standard even in the entry level models, and it can be upgraded to a 7.0-inch touchscreen for infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Tim Kuniskis, the Head of Jeep Brand - North America says of the new model: "Unquestionably a truck and instantly recognizable as a Jeep, the all-new 2020 Gladiator is the ultimate vehicle for any outdoor adventure. There is tremendous demand for this unique vehicle from our loyal Jeep customers and pickup truck buyers everywhere. Born from a rich and proud heritage of tough, dependable Jeep trucks, Gladiator combines rugged utility, versatility and functionality resulting in the most capable midsize truck ever."
