How much can the 2019 Jeep Cherokee tow?

The towing capacity of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee SUV depends upon how you've outfitted the SUV, but the overall range is from 907 kg up to 2041 kg. Even at its base level, which includes a basic Cherokee that's been fitted with an aftermarket Class II type hitch, the towing capacity of 907 kg exceeds many competitors in its class.

Let's start with the basic towing capacities and then look at how you can configure a 2019 Jeep Cherokee for expanded towing capabilities.

Standard Towing Capacities

As mentioned, all models delivered without the Jeep Trailer Tow Group and subsequently equipped with aftermarket Class II type hitch have a maximum towing capacity of 907 kg regales of engine or other features, so if your towing plans exceed that limit, it's best to order your Jeep Cherokee configured to handle the loads you have in mind.

In those models equipped with the 180 horsepower Tigershark 2.4L four-cylinder engine with the nine-speed automatic transmission and equipped with the Class III Trailer Tow Package (Class III) the limit is 907 kg., not bad for a four-cylinder SUV.

The all-new 2.0L direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine develops 270 horsepower and a significant 295 lb.-ft. of torque equipped with engine stop-start (ESS) technology to optimize fuel economy and is fitted with its own version of the nine-speed automatic. When equipped with either Trailer Tow Group or Trailer Tow Prep Package towing capacity jumps to 2,041 kg, tying with the 3.2 V6 for best-in-class capabilities.

When the Canadian-built 271 horsepower 3.2L Pentastar V6 engine is equipped with an automatic transmission and Trailer Tow Group or Trailer Tow Prep Package towing capacity jumps to 2,041 kg, which provides best-in-class towing capabilities.

And keep in mind that every 2019 Jeep Cherokee is equipped with standard Trailer Sway Damping.

Trailer Tow Group

The Trailer Tow Group is available on Latitude, Latitude Plus, Altitude, Limited, High Altitude and Trailhawk and includes a Seven- and Four-Pin Wiring Harness, Heavy-Duty Engine Cooling, Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler, Class III Receiver Hitch, Full-Size Spare Tire.

Trailer Tow Prep Package

If you plan on doing a great deal of towing, it might be wise to check out the Trailer Tow Prep Package that's available only on the Overland model. The Trailer Tow Prep Package bundles great capability features together in one package. A full-size spare tire, a heavy-duty engine cooling package, a 180-amp alternator and seven- and four-pin wiring harness. While the Trailer Tow Prep package doesn't increase towing capacity, it does help provide peace-of-mind for drivers covering long distances.

SafetyTech Group

Another available group worth considering if you're towing is the SafetyTech Group. The SafetyTech Group bundles great safety, security and convenience features together in one package. The SafetyTech Group is optional on Latitude Plus and Trailhawk, standard on Limited and Overland. It includes Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path Detection, and ParkSense Rear Park Assist System, and Power Multifunction Exterior Mirrors that are heated and provide Supplemental Signals and Courtesy Lamps.

Parkview Rear Backup Camera

Maneuver into a parking spot easily with the standard ParkView Rear Back Up Camera. The system displays a rearview video image with dynamic gridlines when you shift into reverse. With an on-screen alert or audible chime, ParkView will bring your attention to hidden rear objects. And when on the road, the system can be configured to provide Trailer Hitch View at Speed so you can check on the status of your trailer at any moment.
